The 38th Comtrade Belgrade Marathon has come to a thrilling close, marking a major milestone for one of Serbia’s most significant sporting events. With Comtrade as the title sponsor, this year’s marathon set a new participation record, drawing 14,000 runners from around the world.
It was also a historic occasion for the women’s race, with the course record falling after an impressive 24-year run.
The record-breaking achievement came courtesy of Kenya’s Deborah Sang, who completed the race in a stunning 2:26:51, nearly three minutes faster than the previous record of 2:29:44 set by Romania’s Cristina Pomacu. Sang’s remarkable performance secured her victory, while Ethiopia’s Lensa Debele Jaleta finished just four seconds behind in second place. Another Ethiopian runner, Kumsa Kuli Chimdesa, claimed third place.
On the men’s side, history was also made as Gilbert Kipleting Chumba became the first male athlete to successfully defend his title at the Belgrade Marathon. Ethiopia’s Kebede Liyew Shengo finished second, while Kenyan athlete Matthew Kiplagat rounded out the top three in third.
The marathon also served as the Serbian national championship for the 42-kilometer race. Đuro Borbelj triumphed as the Serbian champion for the fourth time, while Jovana Stelkić was crowned the women’s national champion.
This year’s marathon offered a variety of races, including the half-marathon, a 10-kilometer race, and the relay half-marathon. Comtrade is proud to support this prestigious event and remains committed to championing athletes and promoting the power of sports and physical fitness.
